Graduation Questions And Answers Plus Description Of What I Have Done

Over the term we have been in an inquiry group. I have been in graduation, which was planning for the year 6 graduation. I wanted to be in the group graduation as it is my graduation and I wanted to make it special and so that I could remember it for the rest of my life.

This Thursday we have finished our graduation inquiry and we had to answer some questions about the procedure and what we liked and what we could have done better etc.

What did you accomplish?
I kind of switched between different DIY'S and Crafts/Projects but the main projects I did was a big tissue paper sign which said 2015 in the middle (that was the hardest projects) I was mainly involved in that but I also helped make / paint jenga blocks white for a jenga memorie tower and I helped with a tissue paper bunting flower thing! I was also part of the speech group and I had to write a year 6 speech with my friends Ana and Bella

What was the most challenging thing? What difficulties did you encounter?
The tissue paper 2015 Sign was definitely the hardest as we had to  wrap the tissue paper around the chicken wire and it kept falling out and the spiky ends of the chicken wire meant that we kept poking ourselves and it really hurt. We also had to thread a bamboo pole through the chicken wire and that really hurt aswell.
What was your proudest moment in your inquiry?
I felt proud on Thursday when we got to step back and look at what we have done and I was proud as we spent a really long time (and even in our own time) working on everything and all the projects we accomplished were finished to a really high standard. I also really enjoyed practicing my speech in front of the whole year 4, 5 and 6 senior team.

Literacy Ladder Writers Note Book Task

Description:
For my Literacy Ladder ( writers note book task for this week) we had to write a list of cool sentence staters. I tried to make mine as suspenseful as possible so the reader would get hooked in straight away.  I highlighted the things Blue I wanted to work on and, in green the things I liked.
Here they are:

Inquiry Graduation/ and future focus

Description:
Every Thursday we do inquiry. I am in Troy's graduation inquiry group and I wanted to be in his group because it will be my graduation and I want to make it special. I am in the crafts/decorations and speech group.

To get my ideas for graduation (decorations) I looked on pinterest to get some really cool ideas. After we got I found some cool ideas I showed them to my decorations group and then we tried to put a a modern twist to each craft idea.

At the moment we are also inquiring about the future. In our inquiry groups we are also have been talking about what we are doing in our inquiry groups: (I'm doing graduation), to benefit the future generation at RSS. I think that we are benefiting RSS as we are leaving a unique legacy behind ( we are role models to all the other year levels)

In my graduation group we are thinking outside the box by adding a modern spin on everything and making all the crafts and decoration group's unique. We are trying to come up new ideas as it will leave a unique legacy that all the other RSS students will remember us.

HERE IS ONE OF THE DECORATIONS/CRAFTS IN PROGRESS.

Book Bash Task (quick write).

This week we had to write a story from a different point of view to your own. We had to write a story from a buildings perspective. I wrote about the Auckland sky tower.

I’m the Auckland sky tower, around 328 meters tall. Everything and everyone on the ground is so insignificant. When people climb up the inside of me they tickle my insides. I try to move around but I’m rock solid. My view is breath-taking! To the left I see all the cars zooming across the winding harbour bridge, and to the left I see all the tall buildings but never as tall as me! Into the distance I see the truly captivating sea. Most people say: I’m one of NZ most spectacular tourist attractions under one roof!

The things I love about be me, is that I get to see people
fret about bungee jumping of me, like c’mon i’m not that high!

The consequences of being me is that when it rains the drips make me freezing cold and when there is wind it rushes through me and makes me shiver...

But all and all I am the best building in the world!

2015 T4 Goals

Description:
This Term we have been talking a lot more about agency. On Monday we had to go through a sheet of paper that had three columns/tables. Self Managing, Self Directed and Self Agency. We had to highlight gold what we can do really well, without thinking about it. Then we had to highlight pink what we think we need to work on.

I think I am a Self Managing / Self Directed / Self Agentic learner because:
I think that I am an agentic learner because I  complete my tasks to a high standard and can reflect on the goals I am working on
The goal that I am currently working on is:
I have decided that I am going to be on Self Agentic and in self agentic my goal is to understand my weakness and know who to address them.
The things I need to do to achieve this goal are
Think about myself more as a learner and when I struggle with something I learn how to work it out. (In other words):  Be a solution seeker.

Book Bash Task (Onomatopeia)

Description:
For one of my Book Bash tasks this week I had to write down a list of Onomatopoeia's. I had been taught about Onomatopoeia before but I forgot what an Onomatopoeia was so I had to go online and find out again!

An Onomatopoeia is:
- A word that mimics the sound of an object or action it refers to.
- Or A:  Formation of a word from a sound associated with it's name

Here is my list of Onomatopoeia':

Discovery Time T4 W2

Description:
Instead of doing E Tero on a Monday afternoon we do discovery time. When I was little we used to do this, but the teachers gave us things to discover and play with. Now that I am a year 6 we get to chose what we want to do/discover but when we do this we have to be showing our school vision, inspiring creativity, agency and excellence. Last week I didn't really know what I wanted to do but I thought about it over the week and decided to do some art.

At the end of discovery time today we had to answer some questions about what we did.

Today For Discovery Time I did:
I went online (pinterest and Youtube) and looked at some cool art ideas and tutorials.

I showed CREATIVITY by:
For some of the art projects I wanted to do, my school didn't have the supplies so I tried to be creative and think about some ways to make the supplies that I didn't have. Eg: We didn't have a really small pointy paint brush so we got a triangular sponge and used the pointy side instead. I also was being creative by putting a modern spin on my art as well ( Not making it exactly the same to what the pieces of art I saw and wanted to create looked like).

I showed AGENCY by:
Doing my art to the best of my ability (a high standard and quality).

I showed EXCELLENCE by:
Doing my art slowly so that I wouldn't make a lot of mistakes because I was doing my art with paint and if you make a mistake you can't really rub paint out!

Next MONDAY I Want To:
Finish painting my art and I want to do a few touch ups!
Here Is my art so far:

Literacy Ladder T4 Pre Reading Follow Up Task

Description:
Yesterday my class looked at some books  on a survey and chose what three books we would like to read for the term. We also had to read the blurb of the book and look at each of the books covers. We didn't read each of the ten chapter books my teacher just took a photo of a random page and we to read that. The three books I liked the most was:
  1. The Place We Call Home
  2. Inside The Game
  3. Petronas
I got my second choice, Inside the game.
Today we had to do a pre reading follow up task we had to asses the cover design, blurb and title and think about what the book might be about and why we chose the book and why it interested us.
Here is the cover of Inside The Game:
Today We Had To:
Asses the cover design blurb and title: Here are some of the questions I had to answer.
  • * 1 What made me chose the book?
  • *2 Why and what appeals to me about this book?
  • *3 What hooked me in?
  • *4 What did we like about the title?
  • *5 My predictions about the book?
  • *6 What did I like about the front cover?
*1 What Made Me Chose This Book
What Made me chose this book: It sounded like a different story from anything I had ever read before.

*2 Why and what appeals to me about this book
When I read the ''Grimm's Fairy Tails " Some of my favourite stories in that book were ones's about Princesses and castles, I thought this story Inside The game  would have a cool modern twist to it

*3 What hooked me in
The blurb really intrigued me and the three objects on the front cover, made me want to discover what the were about...

*4 -The Title seems interesting, and I want to know what it refers to. Also why are there pictures of random objects on the front cover?

*5 -My Predictions About The Book: Exciting, and Scary I don't think I will be sure of the outcome. I also think that the book would come under fantasy. I also think that there will be lots of different scenes throughout the story.

*6 -  The Front Cover: I wanted to know what the three objects were about and what was the connection to the story. Also  Modern day vs olden days (castles and princesses).

Dream Jobs Tic-Tac-Toe

A Tic-Tac-Toe I chose to do today was to read an article called "dream Jobs" and then summarise what you would do if you 'did' that job! here is my summary.

A food taste tester:
-If you were a food taste tester you would have to test all types of different food: From Apples, to Toothpaste to even pet food! They say what they like about the food and what they dislike plus what they think other people will not like and like about the food. They judge each type of food on Texture, Aroma, Flavor and the taste. Also what it tastes like after around 5 minutes.
-If I was a food taste tester I would also test the food on it's appearance/presentation, (how it looks).

Professional Sleeper:
- A professional sleeper is when you go to different places in the world and sleep in different circumstances. For example: A hot place/ a cold place. In Finland somebody hired a person to sleep in around 35 different beds in different types of situations and temperatures and then write about the experience.

Video Game Tester:
- Testers get paid to play unfinished video games all day. They play the games all day and then report any problems/glitches to the game developers to fix before selling the games.

Fragrance Chemist:
- Fragrance Chemist's test different types smells. They study different scents and they develop different scents for men and women. They make up scents for perfume, soap lotions and face wash.

Last but not least...
A Nail Polish Namer:
-Nail Polish Namer's look and paint their nails and figure out what the new type of nail polish should be called. They try and come up with unique names for the new nail polish to be released by the company.

Passion Project T3 2015

WALT:
To use the passion project inquiry process to investigate my passion independently/in a small group.

My Passion Project Inquiry Is:
To learn all the rules/ aspects of interior design and all the "interior design" features and also look for inspiration to maybe design and revamp some of the class rooms or my bedroom.

Big Idea:
I am trying to find out all the ''key'' rules for interior design as I am going to try and make my school class room cooler, showing some of the important features I have learnt. One of the rules that I thought was interesting is that it is not a good idea to have red in a bedroom as it reminds people of food and that it is not a good idea to have blue in a kitchen as it reminds people of the bathroom! Before I start creating I think it is a great idea to create a mood board. A mood board is when you go online and find images that you like to do with your topic.  I was looking for things practical and funky and that don't have to take up much space. Here is my mood board:

Image:
Here are a few images of me working and a document that I made up of "rules" and my mood board.
Here are some of the important rules as well:

Evaluation:
This term I have learnt lots to do with interior design. I also learnt that you can create awesome things, with things you don't need any more! I think that I could have maybe managed my time a bit better because I wanted to start designing my bedroom by now.

Feed back/ Feed Forward:
I can see you have really focused on your designs and it really fits into your personality. I think you are doing really well on planing your ideas and your passion project is something your passionate about! GREAT JOB HANNAH! - Olivia B

Never Say Can't Tic-Tac-Toe

Description:
Today the Tic-Tac-Toe I chose to do was watch a video called "never say can't''. After I watched the video I had to summarise the video. When Writing my summary I had to think about, what message I got out of it and does the women have a growth or fixed mindset?

Here is my summary:
Jennifer Bricker alway inspired to be a gymnast and her idol was Dominique Moceanu but the only problem was Jennifer Bricker was born without legs. They raised Jennifer like they did "normally" with all her healthy brothers, but there was one rule in their house, NEVER SAY CAN'T. Over the years she put her mind to becoming a gymnast with the one rule: NEVER SAY CAN'T. She started at seven on the trampoline practicing with her dad, and then a few years later she was competing at competitions. One day out of curiosity, when she was 16 Jennifer asked what her last name was, her mum then said that her last- name would of been Moceanu. She looked through lots of files and then she wrote Dominique a letter and found out they where sisters.  They also talked to each other and Dominique said:How did she have this attitude to persevere and overcome every obstacle that life gave her?

I think that Jennifer had a growth mindset to persevere and accomplish her goals.

Reading Follow Up Task.

Description:
This term my reading goal is summarizing and we have been reading lots of long stories and summarizing/picking out key details/the main points to summarize a story. As our school production is all about creating a wearable art garment we read all about the famous show WOW ( World Of Wearable Arts) and how it originated/all about what has happened to it over the years. We read this story and wrote out in our books the:

  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Why
  • How
Structure/format (it really helps me pick out the key details). After writing down all of that I wrote my summary.

Here it is:
In rural nelson in 1987 Suzie Moncrieff decided to follow her dreams/passion and Create a show could WOW. (World Of Wearable Arts). With the help of Eelco Boswijk who gave her 1,000 dollars to kick start the event. The only trouble was people didn't quite get her art body concept, some entering colorful knitwear instead! But fortunately there was enough interest/support to take her dream a whole lot further... Over the years the show got bigger and bigger each year, with categories such as Avant-Garde, South Pacific, Man unleashed and the judges personal favourite, Bizarre-bra. In 2000 WOW also became international with people all round the globe attending and entering their costumes! Because the show was getting so big and could no longer fit in the small Nelson theaters, It was announced in 2004 that it would move to Wellington in 2005.
Since WOW has moved to Wellington, the audience has increased by 50% and now more that 35,000 people attend the show each year!

Tic-Tac-Toe Image Promts

Description:
Today for one of my Tic-Tac-Toe's I decided to do image prompts. My task was to think critically about this picture and how it relates to my learning.

Here is the picture:
This picture shows unity and togetherness. Also team work by helping eachother/holding hands while doing it. It also shows caring for each by holding hands (making everyone feel safe). Every one looks like they are putting themselves in the learning pit (because that is where the "best learning happens")! They are showing perseverance and persistence.

If I was one of those people I would be very scared to dive/jump of off where they jumped of but I would never say never or, never say " I can't do that" because that is a fixed mindset and great learning happens when you have a growth mindset. I think I would do it because it would be a one in a lifetime opportunity.

How I can relate to this in my learning is by be kind to everyone because everyone is happier that way. We also show perseverance and persistence and encourage each other to do their best. It also looks like they are having a lot of fun and in my class/poutama we always like having fun.

I think that the picture is very inspiring and if you look at the picture for a long time lots of great messages come across.

Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then Tic-Tac-Toe

Description:
For one of my Tic-Tac-Toe's this week I chose to do the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then Tic-Tac-Toe. What you have to do is read an article and then summarise the story that I just read. I find that it is a great way for me to summarise a story and learn which parts are important in a summary and what you don't really need to put in as I have learnt that summarising is when you focus on the "key"points/ the details of the story you just read. I read the story four flags chosen as NZ is getting/chosing a new flag.
Image:
This is the model We/I used to summarise the story

Somebody- There is no main person in the story as it is the people of NZ choosing the flag but the people who designed each of the four flag could be the main people

Wanted- New Zealand wants a new flag that we can relate to and represents our country, also a flag that doesn't look like another country's. Our goal is to try and make everyone happy with the new flag.

But- The new flag will cost over 25million dollars and not everyone will like the flag that most people chose.

So- The first referendum will be held between November the 20th and the 11th of December.

Then- In March 2016 the public will decided what flag we will have...
I personally like this flag because it has the silver fern and lots of the NZ colors, Black, White and Red. It also has the southern cross on it. It is also similar to some of our sports  teams flags like the All blacks and the Silver ferns.
Here is my summary:
Four flags have been chosen to maybe be the new NZ flag. The first referendum will be held between November the 20th and the 11th of December, and the whole project will cost around 25million. The public will be asked to rank them to decide the final option. This will determine which of the designs will run against the current flag in a second referendum in March 2016 to decide which flag New Zealand will use in the future.

Te Reo Portfolio Sample

Description:
This term in Te reo we have been learning about the human body parts and how to pronounce each body part correctly in maori. After we had learnt most the human body parts we got into small groups (around 3 people) we had to create "something" to show our knowledge/what we had learnt. We could show our learning in any way we wanted, a poster, a music video, or a plain video/puppet pal.

Image:

Big Idea:
To make sure we remembered all of the maori parts we learnt a song called To Ringa ki roto ( it is basically the body parts song but in maori). We also learnt the actions and every week at the start of the lesson we sing the song/do the actions. It is a very catchy song and it has helped me learn and remember most of the body parts. To also help us, we went online to hear people pronounce the correctly, and last but not least we made a poster with a person in the middle and then labeled each of the persons body parts that we could see on the person.

A few weeks later our teachers told us that we had to create a something teaching someone/people all about the body parts. My friends Georgia and Sophie chose to create a poster and our audience was going to be five year olds. We tried to make our poster as interactive as possible as we thought that if it was just a jumble of words the 5 year olds would not be interested! We also tried to chose the body parts that the 5 year olds would now in english. The body parts Georgia sophie and I put on our poster was:

  • Leg: WaeWae
  • Hand: RingaRinga
  • Head: Manaunga
  • Ear: Taringa

Feedback/FeedForward:
I love the way you have used very simple images for your body parts. Hiding them behind flaps and making them 3 D makes your poster interactive and fun. Even if the 5 year olds have limited reading skills they would still be able to get useful information. Well done!
I would love to see at least 4 more body parts named on your poster. Charlotte
Evaluation:
I think the poster that Georgia, Sophie and I made is very interactive and that the 5 year olds would enjoy looking at it and learning the body parts and would not get bored. I think that I would also like to keep singing the song  To Ringa ki roto as it really helped me pronounce the body parts in maori correctly.

Maths Portfolio Sample

Description:
For maths this term we have been focusing on multiplication and division. In stage 7, and my maths teacher is Troy. There are 3 main strategies we have been learning. Known Facts (NF), Splitting (S),  and proportional adjustment (PLAT). My favourite strategies to use are: Known Facts and Proportional adjustment.

Images:
Big Idea:
In my workshop I was given 1 question with 2 parts. The first part was working out 176 x 32 (as I am in stage 7 I had to work out the question using 2 strategies).  The first way I worked out the question was with known facts, Known Facts is when you start off with the facts you know and the work out the question from there. The second way was with proportional adjustment. Proportional adjustment is when you half or 3rd each number or double and treble each of numbers you also double one number and halve the other. I found it easier and faster to work the question using PLAT, as I think that I am quite good at halving and 3rding  which you need to do when using the strategy proportional adjustment. I think that I need to keep working on splitting as I sometimes find it a difficult strategy and I don't understand it.

Evaluation:
I have learnt two new strategies this term, which I think has been very helpful for me to be more confidant in my maths. I still think that the strategies are taking me a little longer than they should for me to work out the question. ( I find choosing the right strategy sometimes hard).

Feedback and FeedForward:
Wow Hannah! I love the way that you are really confident with both these strategies.
The way that you have solved the problems is easy to understand. You have taught me lots.
Next time you could explain more what you are doing in the photo.
Thank you for giving a clear message I really look up at you!
Bella

Writing Portfolio Sample

Description:
In Writing we got given a picture to write about. It was a picture of a cat in a cage and a bird sitting on top of it.We could chose who's point of view we could write from. I chose to write from my own point of view of about what happened, here is the picture of what we had to write about:

Image:

Big Idea:
In Rebecca's Writing group we have been learning all about ideas my goal specifically is to know who my audience is. I am also trying to impact my audience so that the audience understands what I am trying to get across in my writing. I tried to base my writing on the people around 8-12. Before we started writing we used this success criteria to help us:

  • brainstormed precise nouns, descriptive adjectives to describe the image.
  • used prompts such as what the character could see, hear, feel, hear.
  • used the mountain planning form to help us leave clues in our story.
Here is my Writing:

Evaluation:
I think that I used a range of short and long sentences to add impact to my story. But I think that I could have used a few more descriptive words. I liked using the new writing success criteria as I could keep looking back while I was writing and check that my writing was up to standard.

Feed back / Feed forward:
I think you did a great job with adding lots of detail to your story to add impact, good job. But I think next time you could have added more talking between the characters.

World Of Wearable Arts Out Of Africa

Description:
Every Friday we have been getting right into planning and starting to design a costume for production. For our school production our theme is ora-life, and to show that we are doing wearable art and creating a garment/costume. Each class has a different theme. Poutama's three themes are Elements/ Heros and villains and Out Of Africa. I am in Out Of Africa. After a while of thinking about what I was going to make I decided to make out the savannah.

A ''mood'' is where you look on the internet for lots of ideas about what you are going to do before we started planning we created our own mood board with all the ideas we thought we could maybe use.

A few weeks later we started to plan out what our garment is actually going to have in it and what it is going to look like. On my garment I am going to paint a river, stick on pieces of laminated and fresh grass. stick on small rocks and pebbles and grab a whole lots of leaves and trace them onto a piece of paper and then paint the cardboard in the shape of leaf.

Here are if moodboard and my plan:
3 Weeks later:
What, what have I done so far:
I have completely changed what I am doing. I have decided I am going to be a tree:

  • So far I have: Made the trunk, I grabbed some legging and spray painted my pants gold/brown color.

  • I laminated some leafs and cut them out and then punched holes attached string and I have a leaf necklace!
  • I also made  the top half of my tree. It was a long process as I had to cut out/trace 275 leafs (different colors) and then hot glue gun them onto a top I didn't use.
I now have to do:
  • I have started creating my leaf mask (with a GIANT leaf), but have not finished it yet.
  • I also need to do 3 more layers of paper mache and wait for it to dry.
I don't have to do this, but I had some leftover paper leafs so I think I will create a headband with the paper leafs sticking up.
What I need to do:
What I have done so far:
A few more weeks later:
Since we finished our garment we need to evaluate our production costume/garment, here is my evaluation:

1) The materials that I used to create my garment were:

For My Top I Used:
  • Lots of different colored paper
  • A top that I didn't use anymore
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Pencil/pen to trace leaf shape
  • Scissors
  • Paint
For My Leaf Necklace I Used:
  • Old leafs
  • Laminated Sheets
  • String to attach the leafs
  • A hole puncher
For My Leaf Mask I Used:
  • A huge leaf I found in my garden
  • A craft knife
  • Cardboard
  • Hot Glue gun
  • Elastic
  • Lots and lots of Green Paint
  • Paint brush etc

For My Leggings/Pants I Used:
  • Gold/brownish Spray paint
  • Some old leggings I didn't use much anymore
2) The most challenging thing about production for me was:
Trying to problem solve with my leaf mask because: After I had painted my leaf with 1 coat of green, after it dried the green paint kept chipping of, so I did another 4 coats before it stopped chipping but I had to be carful and be gentle with the leaf because a few bits sometimes still flacked of. I had to do a few touch up's.

One day when I was trying to put on my mask one of my friends pointed out that one of the leaf pieces had come right of so I had to stick it back on with hot glue and I put a backing of cardboard on it to make it more stable. The only problem is, is that it has  a lump of were the hot glue had dried but I don't think you will see it from far away.

3) One way I demonstrated a growth mindset during production was:
Being persistent when things didn't work out/never giving up. Also trying to come up with better ways I could create something and also putting myself in the pit  and coming up with new ideas because when you are in the pit that is where the best learning happens also the creative learning!

4) Something I am really proud of about production was:
My leaf garment because I spent the most time on it and kept taking the hot glue gunned leafs on and of until I was happy with it! I also spent a lot of time tracing the leafs and cutting them out perfectically.

5) Our school vision is to create agency, creativity and excellence. I showed this by:
Being creative and trying to come up with my own original ideas as well as thinking outside of the box. I also showed excellence by spending a lot of time to make things look they way I wanted them to look/how I vishended it to look and if something wasn't right I wouldn't leave it and I would fix it up.

Here is my finished garment with me wearing it:

Reading Portfolio Post Tic-Tac-Toe (Summarising).

Description:
In Class each week for reading we have to complete three Tic-Tac-Toe's. It is a place where we get to chose what 3 tasks we want to complete for the week. We have to complete each Tic-Tac-Toe's to a high standard. For the Tic-Tac-Toe this week I chose to do a "fake" news report.  I  had to read an article, I read the article the World's Bodypainting festival. Then we had to summarise the article like we were a real news reporter.

Images:
These are some of the photos of the show, and the artists designing their amazing art:
Big Idea:
I have learnt that when you summarise a story you pick out the "key" points of the story and write about that I also learnt that it is a good idea to use the
Who
What
When
Why
How
chart to really capture the essence of the story/summary.  Here is my news report.
     NEWS REPORT TIC-TAC-TOE
Breaking News:
In Austria between the 3rd and 5th of July the world BodyPainting competition was held. Models from 45 countries came to Austria to display their art. Here is Hanne in Austria to talk about all the amazing art she saw.

Well the artists compete in a range of activities there is the brush and sponge activity and the head piece and illusion contest. The competition was founded in 1998 by Alex Barendregt and is now a popular event that is held each year.

FeedBack and FeedForward:
I love your News Report. I think you put all I need to know. That was very interesting. You also included the 5 W's and the H. I really love it. The thing you could work on, would be including more information about what you learnt in the Big Idea. Great Job!!!
Rosalind:)

Evaluation:
I think that I summarised the story well and in depth but as Rosalind said, I think I could have included more information in the big Idea.

Waste Man Tic-Tac-Toe

For my Tic-Tac-Toe today I chose to do the wasteman activity. As my goal is summarising we are supposed to summarise a story but today it was a bit different. My teacher summarised the story waster man  for us and then we had to right the story backwards. ( We got to make up our own story related to my teachers summary).

Here is my teachers summary:

Waste Man was made by a man named Antony Gormley over a six-week period in 2006 out of tonnes of recycled waste materials, it was then burnt a day after it was finished.
My Summary
One  day in 2006 a man named Anthony Gormley decided to make a figure of a human  entirely made out of tonnes and tonnes of recycled materials because he wanted to show the world that they could be creative with recible objects. To create his masterpiece he used some of these objects  like: wooden chairs, ladders, crates and much much more... It took him 2 and a half years to complete the final product, although it would have taken him 1 and a half years if he stuck everything together with cement but instead he just used a regular glue stick! Anthony said that it was a great  2 and a half years of thinking outside of the box and challenging everybody’s own expectations of me. The hardest part was when the sculpture started to get higher and higher I had to get a crane to do the head. Anthony moved the  sculpture to America.

The next day when Anthony woke up he found all of his hard work demolished by a person who lit it up in flames. He was absolutely gutted .

Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then

The-Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then chart is a good way to summarise a story with it's key points. For one of my Tic-Tac-Toe I read a story about a Bionic eye fitted to a patent who was blind.

Here is my summary:

Somebody:
The Main character was a Man who lived in UK  and over the years couldn't see things far away or in front of him very easily and then all of a sudden became blind

Wanted:
The man wanted to be able to see again.

But:
He thought that as nobody else has been able to see again once they have gone blind, that he wouldn't be able to be cured.

So:
So one day surgeons did an operation to put in what you call a Bionic eye. You have to wear these glasses all the time. These glasses  have a sensor that sends video images to his  \brain which helps him see.

Then:
He can see very well with his glasses on but can not see very well without his glasses so I am guessing that he will have to always where his glasses, although he doesn't now what the future holds...

Description:
For one of my Tic-Tac-Toe this week I looked at another quote and thought about what that quote meant.
This is the quote:

What I thought that this quote meant:

  •  If you did something little it would impact somebody else and then that person would learn from you and do something nice to another person and everybody would start doing something nice and  make the world a better place.
  • I also thought that if there was a big group of people and something bad happened to every single person except you, you could save one person and then once that person is fine they could help a person and then after they are fine they could help another person so that everybody is helping eachother and impacting each other making the world a better place.

Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then

Description:
For one of my Tic-Tac-Toe this week I chose to read a Kiwi Kids article " NZ 4th most peaceful country in the world", and then use the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then chart to summarize the story I just Read.

Somebody- Who is the Main character?
There is not a main character in the story as there is no humans, in the story but you could say that the "main " Character could be NZ as it is talking about how NZ is the 4th most peaceful country.

Wanted - What does the character want or what is it's main goal?
I think that the people of NZ's main goal is to be rated as the most peaceful country in the world

But  -What is the problem in the story or what is keeping the character for achieving it's his/her goal?
What is keeping NZ away from it's goal ( To be the first rated country in the world) is the index rates countries on it's level of security and level of safety.

So - What is the solution to the problem or what is the characters main goal?
Nz's main goal is to be rated the peaceful country in the world. I think we could try and achive this by doing the right thing and trying to get along with others.

Then - How does the story end?
It still hasn't ended yet, NZ is still trying to become the first most peaceful country...

Description:
For one of my tic-tac-toe's this week I chose to review this quote/picture. We had to observe and think about the meanings to the quote. We had to also write down some responses and thoughts about the picture/quote here are my thoughts.  I also wrote what I thought about the quote ( that I thought related to this quote), and what it's meanings are after the dash.

  • We are born to be real not perfect.  - We can't do everything and nobody is perfect.
  • In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take. - Jump to every opportunity.
  • Don't judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again. - Don't judge a fish by what it can't  do.

Summarising (Tic-Tac-Toe Term 3).

Task:
For one of my tic-tac-toe's this week I decided to practice my summarising. So I decided to go on to the bitesize website and do the mini test. You had to read the piece of text and then answer the questions. (Just like an Icas test). I got nine out of ten, although I guessed a few.

ET Reo Portfolio Sample

Description:
Every Monday we have ET Reo. We do ET Reo so that we can learn a new language and we can have a conversation to people in Maori.  ET Reo is when we learn all about Maori phrases, songs and all about the culture so that we can use them in our everyday life. This term our focus has been to learn some Maori fruits and vegetables and/foods and then how to say them properly. After we learnt how to say the fruits and vegetables  and foods properly we learnt how to ask a buddy what they liked and what they disliked.
Video:

Big Idea:
We had to learn lots of different fruits and vegetables foods and then ask a friend what they liked and disliked in a video. I think that I know all of the fruits and vegetables and foods really well and I know how to ask what they liked and dislike but I think that I need to keep practicing trying to pronounce the words properly.

Feedback/Feed Forward:
WOW! What a great movie you guys have made!  You guys have really added depth and detail to your movie. I can really see your improvement in the Maori language. What I think you could do better next time is to show more of what you have learnt. I'm sure you have learnt a lot about the culture! You can also work on pronouncing the words :D Aye

Evaluation:
I was successful at projecting my voice so that the audience could hear what I was saying and I was successful at learning all of the fruits and vegetables/foods. But next time I think that I could improve on pronouncing the words properly because I sometimes didn't pronounce the word nga and I didn't pronounce koe and ae right.

Maths Portfolio Sample

Description:
In Class for maths this term we have been learning all about strategy maths. I am in Stage 6.  We are learning to use the best strategy for each problem. There are four strategies that we are learning about. Rounding and Compensating, Reversibility, Equal addition and Place Value partitioning.
I think that I am good at Rounding and Compensating and Equal addition but I think I need to work on Reversibility and Place Value partitioning.

Big Idea:
In class our teacher told us that we had to work out this sheet of questions. Since I am in stage six we had to work out each question with two strategies. There where objects with the price and then there where questions we had to answer we also had to show our working out:
  • Have a sum more that $550
  • Have a difference between $ 40 and $60
  • Have a sum of exactly $426
  • Have a difference of $134

Feedback/Feedforward:
Well done you have done really well and it looks like you have put a lot of work and effort into it because of the lot of detail you have and all the right strategies it looks like you really know what you are talking about-Bella M

Evaluation:
I think that I am good at Rounding and Compensating and Equal addition but I think I need to work on Reversibility and Place Value partitioning. I think that I always work out Rounding and compensating really well!

Writing Portfolio Sample

Description:
In class I have been learning about complex sentences. We were given a video to watch  called ''Mouse For Sale". Then my teacher said that we had to write about the story but we could change parts of the story. Example: ( I changed the storyline and also the characters within the story). The Mouse for Sale video was like our motivation!
The Video: "Mouse For Sale".

Big Idea:
A Complex Sentence is when you have a simple sentence and then add a sentence to add on to it. ( The sentence that you add on shouldn't make sense on it's own). Example: Hannah is a girl. That makes sense on it's own but it is quite a boring sentence. To make a complex sentence you could say: Hannah is a girl, with long flowy hair. If you just said 'with long flowy hair' it wouldn't make sense.
Here is my Writing, ( The red is where I have put a complex sentence).

Feedback and FeedForward:
Wow Hannah! I am very impressed on how many complex sentences you can fit into one story! You should be proud. I have one question for you. "If you had no idea what a complex sentence was, would that affect the quality in your writing?" -Aye :D

Evaluation:
I think I did a good job using complex sentences, I tried hard to use complex sentences and I found it quite hard. I think that if you didn't use complex sentences and you didn't know about them your writing would be ok but if you did use complex sentences your writing it would be much more interesting.

A few days later we did some collaborative writing I did it with Alyssa. It was the same type of writing, watching a video and then rewriting it with our own twist.
This is the video that I watched Peck Pocketed:

Here is my collaborative writing:

Science Portfolio Sample

Description:
I have been In Troys science group this Term. In Troys Science group we have been learning about Webs. Native Webs a Marine web and our lunchbox food web. The 'Native food web was when we looked at what was in our NZ bushes and what were the predators for our NZ birds. The second web was our Marine food web we learnt what fish eat what. The last web was our lunch box food web we grabbed what was in our lunch box and then investigated further.  At first thought I thought that my food came from the supermarket!

Big Idea: I learnt about how our food is processed and connected to the sun. I also learnt that we need to the sun to live. Our food goes through a lot of care to get to us.... All thanks to the sun. Without the sun we would not have food, such as fruits, nuts and vegetables and chocolate because chocolate comes from a cocoa bean that comes from the ground, which comes from dirt and dirt comes from the sun.

Feedback/FeedForward: I love your poster. What I think you could have done better is putting pictures instead of just writing what it is. I also think you could have added more colour to it. Great Job. Rosalind:)

Evaluation:
I agree with Rosalind, I think that I could put pictures instead of writing it ( for all the visual learners). I think that I put a lot of detail in my poster going deep down explaining all about the foods that I had in my lunch box.

Reading Portfolio Sample Comprehension (Tic-Tac-Toe)

WALT: Make connections
Description: This Term my reading goal is Comprehension. In Comprehension I have been focusing on relating to the text or to myself  - text to text connections/ text to self connections and text to world connections. Text to text is when you can relate to one story and then relate to another novel that has the same message/ storyline. Text to self is when you can relate to the book and to yourself (example: Something that has happened in the story and to you). Text to world is something that has happened in a story and then in the world.
Today in class for one of my Tic-Tac-Toe, I chose to read the story the Hare and the Tortoise. After I read that there were some questions that I had to answer about the story, Here they are:

Who won the race and how?
The Tortoise won the race, because the hair sprinted at the start and was so far away from the tortoise that he thought, I’m just going to have a quick nap. The short nap turned into a long sleep. While the hair was sleeping the Tortoise passed the sleeping hair and won the race. The hare  woke up to the crowd cheering well done Tortoise you won the race!

What was the moral (or lesson that can be learned) from the story? Believe in yourself, anything is possible if you dare to achieve.

Write one text to self connection you have made with the story.
I am not the fastest runner, and this year in cross country I came 7th which last year I came 11th so I think I did much better than last year. How I can relate to the tortoise is because the tortoise believed in his her/self and kept going and won the race When I was running I kept going and going and I did much better than last year.

Write one text to text connection you have made with the story.

In the book Charlie and the Chocolate factory, all the contestants who had  won a  golden ticket bragged that they had found a golden ticket and they weren't being very nice about it, but when Charlie found a golden ticket he didn’t brag and he asked his parents if they wanted the golden ticket! I can make a connection between the hare and the tortoise because the hare bragged to the tortoise that he was going to win but he didn't.

Big Idea/ Success Criteria:
I need to be able to make these connections:
  • Text to Text
  • Text to World
  • Text to Self

Feedback and feedforward:
I think you did an amazing job on your moral on the story. You seem to know all about Comprehension. It really relates to integrity.......  Your text to self connection is a good start to your story. Maybe next time you could do your description a little less BIG.  Good Job Olivia B

Evaluation:

I think that I explained the questions really well (In depth)  I think that in reading I need to keep trying and reflecting on text to world, because sometimes I struggle on finding an example.

Connections

For one of my tic-tac-toe activities I chose to listen to some different stories and chose what connection the children had made... There was No connection, text to text, text to self, and text to world. I did 30 questions and got 22 right, so I got 8 questions wrong. Here is the evidence:
